PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- This Memorial Day Weekend, the North American Aerospace Defense Command will have the honour of officially welcoming the Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada, His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston.

As part of a working visit to the states of Georgia, Florida, Texas, Oklahoma and Colorado to discuss and promote innovation, education, trade and philanthropy, Governor General David Johnston will make a special stop in Colorado Springs to recognize NORAD’s role in advancing the U.S.-Canada defence partnership. Since 1958, Canadians have served alongside U.S. military personnel within the NORAD. Today, this partnership continues with the presence of more than 150 members of the Royal Canadian Navy, Royal Canadian Air Force, Canadian Army and Canadian civilians, along with their families, here in Colorado Springs.

On Sunday, May 29th, 2016, Governor General David Johnston, in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief of Canada, will tour the Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station and receive briefings from NORAD leadership on various aspects of the unique binational partnership that has spanned over 58 years. The Governor General’s visit will conclude with a special Memorial Day luncheon with U.S. and Canadian service members.

Governor General David Johnston was sworn in on October 1st, 2010. As The Queen’s representative in Canada, he exercises the duties of Head of State, and as Commander-in-Chief of Canada, he visits Canadian Armed Forces personnel and their families at home and abroad, presents military honours and appoints the Chief of the Defence Staff on behalf of the Prime Minister of Canada.
