CSAF Gen. Welsh explores Thule AB during Thanksgiving visit

THULE AIR BASE, Greenland - Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Mark A. Welsh III, takes a group photo with Airmen of the 12th Space Warning Squadron at Thule Air Base, Greenland on Nov. 23. Making a special holiday visit to Airmen, Welsh interacted with 21st Space Wing’s 12th SWS Airmen to gain a better understanding of the Ballistic Missile Early Warning System Site I mission. The primary mission of BMEWS Site I is to provide early warning of Intercontinental Ballistic Missile and Sea Launched Ballistic Missile attacks against the continental U.S. and Canada. THULE AIR BASE, Greenland - Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Mark A. Welsh III, is briefed on the mission of the northernmost tracking station in the Air Force Satellite Control Network by Tech. Sgt. Steven Tate, Detachment 1, 23rd Space Operations Squadron, at Thule Air Base, Greenland on Nov. 23. In addition to gaining a better understanding of the unique space and satellite command and control operations located 700 miles north of the Arctic Circle, Welsh was able to wish everyone stationed at Thule AB a happy Thanksgiving. The 821st Air Base Group hosted Welsh as he explored Thule AB and wished Artic Airmen from both the 21st Space Wing and 50th Space Wing a happy Thanksgiving. While there, he gained a better understanding of the unique missile warning and space surveillance and satellite command and control operations missions located 700 miles north of the Arctic Circle. Because of its northern location, Thule experiences constant darkness from November until February, and average winter temperatures range from 13 to 20 degrees below zero, with 85 degrees below zero being the lowest recorded reading.
