Monkey time as CDC gets new playgrounds

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- Kids here may be excited to learn the Child Development Center is getting two new playgrounds to improve handicap accessibility, integration of natural components to enhance learning through nature and, of course, improve outdoor play for the children.

The main Peterson CDC facility will be getting a new preschool and toddler playground with construction beginning this spring. Last summer a site assessment was conducted on Peterson's child and youth playgrounds to determine eligibility for funding.

"We are fortunate to have been selected to receive funding to enhance our outdoor play environments," said Dorothy Choate, chief of the 21st Force Support Squadron Airman and Family Services Flight. "These new playgrounds will bridge the gap between nature and technology. Our children will be empowered to explore, learn and play through nature."

The funding for the two new playgrounds at the CDC was approved and is from the fiscal year 2010 and 2011 defense budgets. The project's final approval came this year.

The Department of Defense requires all playgrounds built on military installations be handicap accessible and meet specific Americans with Disabilities Act standards. All of Peterson's playgrounds meet these requirements and are ADA approved.
