Peterson youth center set to temporarily close due to positive COVID cases

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. --

Peterson AFB leadership learned July 4 that a staff member and two children in the base youth center’s school age care program tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19).  Individuals identified through contact-tracing having first-person contact with the employee or children have been notified and asked to be placed in quarantine for the recommended time frame.

Out of an abundance of caution the Peterson youth center will be closed and sanitized Monday, July 6, for the safety of its children and workers. Additionally, the base youth center’s open recreation program has been suspended until further notice due to staffing shortages.

Peterson AFB is taking necessary precautions to avoid the spread of COVID-19 in our community. Existing recommendations from 21st Medical Group Public Health remain unchanged: practice physical distancing, wear a face covering when out in public, practice good hand hygiene and stay home if sick.

In addition, 21st MDG will be offering testing through their drive-thru point of testing site to these individuals to identify early infections. Based on the child and staff member’s last contacts within the youth center and when they began exhibiting symptoms, there is minimal risk to any other members.

As a reminder, Team Peterson members who are feeling ill during duty hours are encouraged to contact the medical appointment line at 719-524-2273 for specific procedural guidance. If members are feeling ill after duty hours, they can contact the nurse advice line at 800-874-2273 for further direction.
