PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- LGBT Pride Month has been celebrated every June since 1970 after the 1969 Stonewall riots in New York, when police raided the Stonewall Inn. The purpose was not to elevate one community over the other; it was merely to provide a place to be one’s most loud, proud, and free self. (Courtesy photo)

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- When it comes to a month of a particular observation such as pride, often, the question arises of why there is a month that highlights and celebrates the LGBT community, but there is not one for the straight community.

One must remember that until September 20, 2011, being gay and open was grounds for separation in the military and same-sex marriage in the United States was on a state-by-state basis until June 26, 2015. There is a level of social and systemic privilege not afforded to many members of the LGBT community in many parts of the world solely on the basis of who one chooses to love.

Pride has been celebrated every year in June since 1970 after the 1969 Stonewall riots in New York when police raided the Stonewall Inn. The purpose was not to elevate one community over the other; it was merely to provide a place to be one’s most loud, proud, and free self. Today, you can find a mix of not only people who are LGBT but the allies that support the community as well.
